Spirulina

Spirulina has been dubbed one of the most complete super-foods. It can be found in many health supplements, powders, and drinks. It is usually taken for its energy-boosting and detoxifying properties. Despite its popularity, many are still in the dark about its other amazing properties.

 What Exactly is Spirulina?

Spirulina is a type of algae and cyanobacteria. It is grown in fresh waters like lakes and ponds where it uses sunlight to become this micronutrient power-algae. Central Africa, Mexico, and Hawaii are the top locations where spirulina is grown.

Health benefits

Spirulina is excellent for gut health and this is due to its probiotic properties. It increases the life of microbion and promotes good digestive and gut health. A healthy digestive system leads to better detoxification of the body. Fortunately, spirulina helps with that as well! It has been medically proven to detox heavy metals from the body (such as arsenic[2]) that are known to cause disturbances in the organs and neurological deterioration.

Spirulina contains a significant amount of chlorophyll. This is a green pigment that aids in the process of photosynthesis in plants via the absorption of sunlight. [3] One of the greater effects of chlorophyll is its promotion of alkalinity in the blood. Other benefits include:

  • elimination of pathogenic yeast
  •  effective against free radicals
  • detoxification of toxins
Spirulina has many important vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function. From them are:

  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin K
  • Zinc
  • Magnesium
The star property of spirulina is its protein content. In all of the known plants in the plant kingdom, spirulina is said to rank the highest. On average, spirulina contains 60 percent of protein (39 grams per ounce)[4]  and contains all of the essential amino acids making it a complete protein source.

How to Use

Spirulina can be purchased in the form of powders, tablets, or flakes. You can mix it in your dishes, smoothies or juices.

You want to be cautious of where you obtain your spirulina as a contaminated product can cause some pretty nasty side effects. Always check labels, harvesting origins and sales dates (and harvesting dates if the company provides it).

One trusted company by the name of Organic Burst provides sustainably sourced spirulina and other superfoods. (Check out their spirulina >> here <<)
