To Salt or Not to Salt?

Why is Salt Bad?

The matter is not salt per se but rather the type of salt. The ever-so-popular table salt is an underlying, hazardous culprit for many health issues such as diabetes, Osteoporosis, obesity, and thyroid dysfunction.[1] These issues come about due to the mixture of chemicals within it that our bodies view as toxins. Table salt is refined and stripped of its natural trace minerals such as iodine and sodium. Companies replace stripped minerals with artificial ones along with bleaching and anti-caking agents that have been proven to cause more damage than benefit.[2]
Our bodies are equipped to fight back and attempt to restore balance. In this case, it does so by rapidly raising the pressure of blood to avert the toxins away from the heart. Unfortunately, many allow this to become consistent and when this happens it is known as high blood pressure [3].

Make the Switch

Sea salts are inexpensive substitutes found at many local markets that can deliver the same kind of flavor enhancement to your dishes with a nutritious bonus. Sea salts are unrefined salts that have their natural trace minerals intact. There are few out there like Alaea sea salt and Flaky sea salt, but I would like to touch on the two most popular.

1. Himalayan Sea Salt

A.K.A "Pink gold"; this salt is dubbed the world's purest form of salt. It comes from salt mines 5,000 feet deep below the Himalayan Mountain Range. It's not only fascinating in color but contains a wide range of benefits. These include but are not limited to:

  • Promoting ph balance in cells
  • Aiding in vascular health
  • Reducing cramps
  • Encouraging healthy libido
  • Improved respiratory problems

2. Celtic Sea Salt®

This salt has fewer minerals than Himalayan Sea salt but is still a healthy option to choose. It comes from Brittany, France and is greyish in color. It has similar benefits as well but can also:
  • Promote restful sleep
  • Increase energy
  • balance blood sugars
  • Alkalize the body

Kimberly Lackey, an Integrative Nutritionist, Health Coach and the Founder of EMPATH Coaching has this to say about salt:
"Salt itself is so vital to our existence, that our tongues were created with special taste buds to detect the flavor. Table salt gets a bad rap for a good reason. It has been stripped of the essential trace minerals our body needs. Sea salt, left unrefined, provides our body crucial nutrients and can truly be an excellent health promoter. Don't forget you don't have to just eat salt, you can use Epsom Salt or Himalayan Sea salt in a bath, as a body scrub or a face exfoliant."

Remember anything in excess can put you in a hitch; balance is key!
