Oils for Hair and Skin Care

In an effort to further continue to transition to a healthier lifestyle, we must look at all products that we use to take care of ourselves. Lotions, conditioners, and moisturizers that we see on the shelves of supermarkets and shops are commonly loaded with harmful chemicals that can give unwanted side effects to our bodies, especially in the long run.

A great way of rectifying this is using pure, unrefined oils.  These oils I have listed are my top favorites for my day to day needs. They can be used for hair (to lock in moisture or treat the scalp) and for the body.

Grapeseed Oil

This is my #1 oil for skin care use. It's inexpensive, light on the skin and does not carry a heavy scent. Grapeseed oil [1] has a good content of vitamin E, which protects the skin from ultra-violet rays and various pollutants due to the antioxidant properties within it. This oil has natural anti-aging properties due to its moisturizing nature and ability to improve elasticity to the skin. Because it is light, it makes it an amazing oil to add to one's hair regimen, more so if you have hair that does not do well being weighed down by products.

Coconut oil

The ever-so-popular coconut oil is used for many purposes as it is versatile and contains numerous benefits [2]. Coconut oil can be used as a light and natural sunscreen whilst allowing beneficial rays that provide vitamin D to pass through.[2,3] It also has anti-microbial properties that help with rashes, itches, and dermatitis. [4]
For hair use, coconut oil is beneficial as a conditioner; adding shine and nourishing the hair with vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, it is an effective aid against dandruff and lice.

Avacado Oil

Rich in healthy fatty acids, the benefits of  Avacado oil goes further than just being a fine cooking oil. It has been proven to help cases of a skin condition called Psoriasis.[5] It contains anti-inflammatory properties that help improve irritated, sunburned or sensitive skin. Avacado oil has phytosterols, a botanical compound responsible for its rejuvenating property. For those with oily skin, this oil is a great match as it can help regulate the natural oils in the skin. [6,7]

In terms of hair, avocado oil is rich in monosaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. This is a great combination to encourage hair growth.

Almond Oil

Sensitive skin is no issue with this oil. Its light and hypoallergenic nature make it an ideal oil to use on infants and young children. It is easily absorbed into the skin, delivering its nutrients including vitamin A, E, and other antioxidants ( making it helpful in maintaining healthy hair). It clears pores and renews skin cell leading to improve the appearance of skin, fight acne and signs of aging. Its a natural remedy for eczema [8] and can help with the symptoms of Psoriasis.

Jojoba Oil

This isn't technically an oil, but rather a liquid wax from the jojoba plant. Even with this thicker consistency, it moisturizes very well. Its a must-have for facial skin care as it removes excess build-up, oils and fights bacteria that can lead to breakouts.
Native Americans used Jojoba oil to treat sores and wounds [9]. Healing is accelerated as a result of the B vitamins and vitamin E in combination with its liquid wax texture.

Jojoba oil helps tame frizz, adds softness to hair and moisturizes dry follicles. It is useful in treating conditions like alopecia and general hair loss as a result of stress or other factors.

When purchasing any of these oils, look for the highest quality or grade you can afford. Avoid oils that are refined have added chemicals or ingredients that could lead to reaction or irritation. Always test new products on an inconspicuous area upon your body before adding it to your daily regimen.
